Got a trip coming up? I’ve searched high and low to find the best women’s jackets for travel in Europe for you.
You need a jacket that keeps you warm, dry; yet still manages to look smart. That’s not too much to ask is it?
You know that saying “there’s no such thing as bad weather just bad clothes”? British weather puts it to the test!
What to Look for in a Women’s Jacket
- Water resistant or water repellent finish

If you’re not used to a cold damp climate, UK weather can come as bit of a shock. It all depends on your plans.
Planning to visit both the UK and Europe?
Both have similar climates – but the farther north you go the colder it gets. Obvs.
Scotland can be chilly while London will feel mild – all on the same day!
Planning outdoor activities like walking and hiking? Bundle up with waterproof or water resistant gear.
Sightseeing in London? Aim for a balance of smart and warm.

Best Women’s Jackets for Travel in Europe
A. VERY COLD: Outdoor activities | Scotland & the North
- The further north you go, the more you’ll need extra warmth with wind protection
- Choose a jacket with a proven material like down, wool or thermal properties
- A hip length jacket is ideal. Leave room for sweaters.
B. MEDIUM COLD: Travel by car, train | Southern England & London
- London is usually warmer than the countryside
- Add extra warmth with layers like scarves or a down vests (known as gilets here)
- Quilted jackets can be very versatile, waterproof is a plus
C. COLD to MILD: Travel by car, train | France, Italy or Spain
- It can be several degrees warmer at this latitude, but be prepared for showers.
- Insulated trench coat styles are smart enough to wear in Paris or any major city
- Choose a size that allows a little room to layer underneath
Best Tips for Packing
A. Layers are the Solution
When winds blow in from the Atlantic or North Sea, the secret to staying warm and comfortable is layers.
- Invest in a second skin thermal layer or top to keep body heat in.
- Add a light wool layer/sweater.
- Your jacket is the final “layer”.

B. Water Resistant or Water Proof?
A jacket that is water resistant OR water proof is essential for the UK climate. Because… rain!
- Unless a jacket is rubberized or coated it’s not fully water-proof.
- Water proof means it should keep you dry even in a downpour
- Water resistant means it will keep you dry in light or misty rain (not heavy downpours)
- If you plan to be outside a lot, look for water repellent, water proof or water resistant.
